Artist Statement
To create my artwork, the first step was finding out which element we would be designing, and mine was fungi. As a class, we then created a checklist that our square had to follow in order to meet the required criteria. After that, I made a plan for how I wanted to design my square, chose the materials I wanted to use, and began creating it. While working on my piece, I faced a few challenges. When sewing, the string would sometimes bunch together and form knots at the end. I worked through this by using shorter pieces of thread to help prevent the knotting. Another challenge was adding the “grass,” which would not stay in the position I wanted. I was not able to fully overcome this issue, and I worry that the pieces might fall out if they are pulled on. Overall, I really liked my artwork because sewing and needlepoint are strengths of mine. The final result turned out better than I expected, and I especially liked using pearls for the mushroom spores. However, I did not like that some of the grass pieces did not work the way I wanted, and there is also a small spot where I accidentally cut the fabric, which might cause the thread to come out. I titled my artwork Enchanted Mushroom Collaborative Quilt Square. Through creating this piece, I learned the importance of not rushing and taking my time, because rushing can make the work look messy and lead to a poorer outcome. If I were to create it again, I would choose smaller pearls because the large ones made it difficult to sew the top since they got in the way.
