Free Inquiry #3- Lighting in the Classroom

Lighting in the classroom plays a crucial role in influencing learning, focus, mood, and overall student performance.

The lighting in a classroom can improve concentration and alertness with natural light. The use of natural light in the classroom with sunlight has been shown to improve students’ alertness and focus, which leads to better attention during lessons. When having poor lighting or dim environments can make students feel drowsy or disengaged, especially during longer lessons.

Having natural light in the classroom has shown that it can boost academic performance, such as better test scores and reading speed. Having proper lighting helps students reduce eye strain and fatigue, which allows students to focus for longer periods of time.

The lighting in the classroom can affect mood and behaviour in students. Having a bright, well-lit space can generally promote positive moods, making students more motivated and cooperative when learning. When having poor lighting, especially fluorescent lights, can sometimes cause headaches, eye discomfort, or irritability in sensitive students.

When having good lighting, it can enhance visual clarity with seeing the board, textbooks, and their own work. Uneven or inadequate lighting can lead to students having difficulty reading or seeing the teacher’s presentation.

The difference between natural light and artificial light is that natural light is ideal for the classroom. Natural light can support healthy sleep cycles and increase vitamin D exposure. While artificial lighting is necessary, but should mimic natural light as much as possible. This can include having artificial lighting with warm tones, and balanced white lights are best.

Students with learning difficulties, ADHD, or autism can be more sensitive to lighting when it is flickering or has a glare. Adjustable lighting or access to natural light can create a more supportive environment for diverse learners in the classroom.

In Summary:
